Overview
The VertiGreen Hybrid will change the way you look at commercial trellises. By integrating a vertical plant growing module into a VertiGreen rigid 3-D trellis, the trellis can be pre-grown and placed anywhere without having to wait years to fill in. You can get the coverage of a living wall at the cost of a trellis! Most designers calculate that it takes a minimum of 3-5 years for plants to cover a 10' trellis, and in many cases the wall never achieves coverage. The Hybrid system only requires vines & climbers to cover 1' in any direction, which can easily happen within the first few months. The image below was taken 2 weeks after installing 1-gal vines.
The VertiGreen Hybrid has a recycled plastic VGM plant growing module, set into our double-panel trellis system. The plants are grown in the module on its back (either on its own or installed in the trellis), and hung on the wall or screen once the plants are rooted in. Because the plants are grown in the trellis, it can easily be used in areas distant from the ground or another planter. The VGM plant growing module (above) has no internal baffles or separations, allowing the roots to fully develop and grow. With options for 4", 6" and 8" of soil volume, there isn't a better living wall module on the market. Made of recycled polypropylene, the robust design snaps together easily in the field. Because the soil is contained within an inorganic non-woven fabric bag in the box, there is complete aeration of the soil from all sides. The double-panel trellis nurtures climbing plants and vines while it protects the underlying structure. The panels are spaced 3" apart, and use a 6" grid, although 3" or 12" are available upon request. The VertiGreen Hybrid is made to commercial-grade specifications. The panels are plated with zinc prior to powder coating to resist rust and corrosion, ensuring the trellis looks good for the life of the building The VertiGreen Hybrid mounts to the wall with the same simple bracket as is used with the original VertiGreen rigid trellis. The VTGB bracket (3" shown below) is delivered with a 1/2" plastic mounting pad for use with slightly irregular surfaces (i.e., stucco or uneven stone). Either the plant growing module or the entire panel can be quickly removed for maintenance.
The VertiGreen panels are available in any combination of no-edge, split trim or continuous edge, depending upon the application (see below).
Optional VertiGreen Drip IrrigationThe units are available with pre-assembled drip irrigation tubing. Each plant growing module has its own a 2-port 2GPH drip head. These are connected with 1/2" poly tubing, either run vertically (shown below), or horizontally across the panel. The units can quickly and easily be assembled in the field with hose barbs connecting adjoining units. While Tournesol Siteworks can assist with irrigation design, we advise having an irrigation design professional review the site, exposure, and local codes to determine the system configuration. A timer, pressure regulator, filter, and fertigation system is typically required for each installation.
How It Works
The VertiGreen Hybrid panel consists of two elements - the VertiGreen Hybrid trellis with mounting angles, and the VGM plant growing module. The VGM module will typically be planted on its back (either by itself or installed in the trellis) in the nursery, and the vines allowed to grow in for 1-3 months, longer for full trellis coverage.
TheVGM module is held securely in the trellis panel with 4 mounting angles (shown above), each of which uses 2 ea.1/4" x 3" stainless steel bolts screwed into the mount. The module can be removed in the field for maintenance or change-out, if required. Once the VGM module is grown in, the trellis is hung on the wall using the simple VTG mounting brackets, shown below. The brackets are held into the wall with a 3/8" wall anchor system, not included. The dead load on each anchor should not exceed 50lbs., although the brackets are designed to withstand a live load (including wind load) of 250 lbs. The 48"x48" panel requires 4 brackets, the 96"x 48" panel requires 6 brackets. The bracket spacing and locations may vary.
